Student Stories
Pursuing an MBA at CIAM has helped to further refine my leadership and management capabilities as my career progresses. The program has helped me integrate each stage of my journey – from industrial manufacturing to investment analysis to global markets, reinforcing the strategic lens through which I approach organizational and industry challenges.
The MLA philosophy has sharpened how I frame projects and lead teams. I run kickoffs differently, anchoring on purpose and user outcomes before drawings and durations, and I am more intentional about listening across disciplines. It’s also changed my personal cadence, short reflective notes after major decisions, explicit trade off conversations, and a stronger bias toward long term reliability over short term wins.
CIAM is diverse and inclusive, a place where different perspectives are welcomed and valued. The sense of belonging has encouraged me to stay true to my mission to help others and serving my community. CIAM has strengthened my confidence and reaffirmed my aim to be a purpose-driven leader. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the professors, staff, and fellow leaders in the MAOL program. I’m truly grateful to be a part of this incredible learning community.
CIAM has strengthened my presentation and communication skills and provided me with practical training that directly helped me land the job I have today. The program delivers tangible results.

Governance with Purpose: A Human-Centered Approach
The concept of governance has deep historical roots, originating in the structures and principles used to organize and lead societies. Early forms of governance—such as city-states, assemblies, and representative systems—laid the foundation for modern constitutional and parliamentary frameworks.
In more recent years, governance has often been discussed within the context of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), a framework popularized by the 2004 United Nations report Who Cares Wins. Within this lens, governance is typically associated with evaluating organizations as responsible investments—assessing risk factors that extend beyond purely financial performance.
At the California Institute of Advanced Management (CIAM), we take a broader and more human-centered view of governance, grounded in the philosophy of Peter F. Drucker and the principles of Management as a Liberal Art. For us, governance is not limited to compliance or investment evaluation—it is a reflection of how organizations are led, how people are developed, and how responsibility is exercised in service of a greater purpose.
Our approach to governance emphasizes:
- Leading people, not merely managing processes
- Practicing ethical, responsible, and values-driven leadership
- Cultivating self-governance through lifelong learning and personal accountability
- Empowering autonomy while maintaining organizational alignment
- Prioritizing clear communication and measurable performance outcomes
- Ensuring transparency in decision-making
- Upholding responsibility alongside authority
- Considering the needs and contributions of all stakeholders
- Encouraging innovation and problem-solving at every level
- Maintaining strong data governance and regulatory compliance
At CIAM, governance reinforces the idea that management is a liberal art—one that requires a deep understanding of human behavior, relationships, and purpose. Effective governance is ultimately about fostering a culture where individuals are treated with dignity and respect, and where every member of the organization is empowered to contribute meaningfully.
In this way, governance becomes not just a system of oversight, but a pathway toward what Drucker described as “a functioning society”—one built on responsibility, contribution, and shared purpose.

This Earth Day, we recognize that protecting our planet is only one part of sustainability. True impact is built through strong communities, responsible leadership, and a commitment to governance and shared responsibility across organizations and society.
As a human-centered institution, we embed sustainability into our initiatives and practices—grounded in Peter Drucker’s philosophy of Management as a Liberal Art. We empower leaders to make decisions that extend beyond organizational success to serve the greater good.
Sustainable progress is not individual—it is collective, requiring thoughtful governance, accountability, and shared responsibility to create lasting impact.

Many organizations focus on doing things faster.
Peter Drucker argued the real question is whether those things should be done at all.
This idea is central to Management as a Liberal Art, where leadership is not just about efficiency, but about purpose, responsibility, and meaningful results.
At CIAM, these principles shape our Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (MAOL) program, where students learn to lead with intention, think critically about organizational impact, and apply Drucker’s philosophy to real world leadership challenges.

This month’s MLA Roundtable and Reading Group—an initiative with our research institute @mlaresearch and led by Research Director, Dr. Karen Linkletter—opened with an experiential exercise. Teams worked together to role play different leadership perspectives while advising a hypothetical client, exploring how different roles shape leadership, communication, and decision making.
In this month’s Reading Group, the discussion centered on Peter Drucker’s classic book The Effective Executive, which explores the habits that make leaders truly effective, including managing time, focusing on meaningful contributions, and making thoughtful decisions that drive results.
Group discussions and exercises like these help bring the principles of Management as a Liberal Art to life through collaboration, reflection, and practice.
